Collecting royalties for creators? Sounds right
New efforts made to protect original intellectual creations in the literacy and artistic domain

Sound Recording Rights Society, Inc. (Soundsright) was recently accredited by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to collect royalties on behalf of various record labels and producers in the Philippines.
Soundsright is composed of record label executives from GMA Records, Alpha Music, Star Records, Universal Records and Viva Records.
In an interview, Soundsright President Atty. Marivic Benedicto explained that they will collect royalties only from established businesses.
“Kunyari ’yung sa terminal ng tricycle, mahirap silang kolektahan kasi maliit pa lang sila na establishment. Pero ’yung mga restaurants or mga radio stations, naka-register ’yan, so sisingilin natin sila,” she said. “So, depende talaga sa establishment and sa reach. Ang babayaran nila (annually) can be as low as P500 up to P1 million.”
The move is meant to properly implement Article 2 Section 209 of the IP code, which aims to protect original intellectual creations in the literary and artistic domain.
She maintained the effort will benefit an industry that’s also been suffering for a long time now from piracy, noting how composers, performers, and producers have been pushing for more stringent laws to curb the illegal practice.
“’Yung iba kasi (na law) hindi lang talaga nai-implement. Pero sa FILSCAP (Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publisher) meron naman silang ways to protect the composers,” she said.
Benedicto hopes they can tie up with the local government to further their campaign against piracy.
“Dati kasi kumikita pa ang mga record labels. Ngayon hindi na kasi halos lahat ay online na… may piracy pa,” she said.
Winning campaign
Meanwhile, Optical Media Board (OMB) Chairman Ronnie Ricketts proudly shared that the United States has already removed the Philippines from the list of countries that have been blacklisted for supposedly not properly protecting United States Trade Representatives (USTR) copyrights and patents.
According to a report on Reuters, the USTR lauds the Philippine authorities for enforcing laws to implement protection of intellectual property rights. The Philippines was stricken off the US piracy hotspot watch list only in 2014, after being in the list for two decades.
“It’s good for the economy and good for the industry. Kasi it shows na ang Pilipinas ay ginagawa ang lahat laban sa pirata,” Ricketts said.
He vowed to continue his work, along with IPO, Philippine National Police (PNP), National Cinema Association of the Philippines (NCAP), andMovie Picture Anti-Film Piracy Council (MPAFPC).
“Marami na ang tumutulong mula sa ating gobyerno at universities kaya tuloy-tuloy lang po ang mga kampanya, operations, at dialogues,” he said.
With his successful campaign against piracy, Ricketts is now being courted by some politicians urging him to run for public office. He declined.
“Ang mga offers sa atin ay linya-linya. Pero kasi mahirap mag-adjust kaya dito na lang muna ako,” he said.
What Ricketts actually wants is return to doing what he does best: Action films. “Gusto kong buhayin ang original na action films. Hopefully makagawa ako ng isa pang movie. Meron kasi akong kino-conceptualize na script na sana madala ko sa Star Cinema or Viva,” he shared. (With report from Bhenj Agustin)
